#TruLondon & Women of HR

Why do you attend conferences?

  1. It’s the only way I can get a day off work!
  2. They always give me a really great bag of goodies!
  3. The speakers leave me inspired and full of ideas!
  4. It’s the chance to connect with new people and engage in real conversations with my peers!

Personally I pick 4. Why? Because ideas are everywhere, speakers put videos and free goodies online everyday and if it’s the only way you get a day off work then seriously run long and fast from wherever you are working!

Seth Godin recently wrote how no matter what conference he attends, including the TED conference, he sacrifices attending the sessions in order to engage in real conversations which you can read all about here.

So what sort of conversations did I engage in at #TruLondon? Well I had the privilege of meeting some amazing Women of HR. At first I was a little overwhelmed by so many ‘internet’ and ‘twitter’ celebrities/personalities in one room. But at the end of the day I realised that we are all just people who go through the same routines as everyone else. We still wake up and put our pants on one leg a time and considering it was a global conference we were all experiencing different side effects from travel such as an interrupted poop schedule!

So if you want read about the conversations I engaged in then head over to Women of HR to read my latest guest post and don’t forget to let me know why you attend conferences in the comments section!

#TruLondon – The HRockstar in London Part 1

So I’m officially back into the swing of things. It’s been 6 days since I landed back in Australia after my four week holiday/conference expedition over to Europe and I think my sleeping pattern is back to normal now.

My three days at the #TruLondon were amazing. A big thanks to @BillBoorman for all his hard work. It blows every other conference out of the water. The quality of the participants and the conversations were second to none and the relationships that I built were developed over the three days and unlike the networking at other conferences I’ve been to this felt a lot more genuine. I look forward to staying in touch with everyone and hopefully seeing them again at another #tru event.

To celebrate my international speaking debut I’m dedicating the month of March to a wrap up of my time at #trulondon as well as introducing you to some of my favourite people I met over there.

Part 1 of my journey will be the video of a panel I was on in the jobsite.co.uk live stream room. After picking up the flu on the final day of the conference my Australian accent seems to be as strong as it’s ever been. I’m speaking with Maren Hogan, Charlie Duff & Rhiannon Hughes on employability.

Why stopping is more important than starting.

How many times have you heard a brilliant piece of advice? One that will change your life if you implement it? Only to forget about it for the next day and the subsequent following days.

I think at times we are all guilty of this. This confession refers to the following piece of advice “Rather than operating at 110% you should take some time to sit back and reflect once in a while.”

Whilst I’d like to say that I do this enough I now realize that I don’t. I’ve had my eye on the ball for so long that it seems like I’ve forgotten what game I am playing. Whilst being driven to succeed in a career that you love is a great pursuit it doesn’t mean that you should dedicate every last-minute to it.

I’m writing this at 10:00 PM from Siena, Italy. I have a pizza to my left and a Peroni that is so large it doesn’t actually quantify how much is in the bottle. I’ve slept in until 11. Had Pizza for lunch & gelato for afternoon tea whilst slipping in a macchiato just before the sun went down. I spent the day seeing the sights and taking in the breath-taking moments with somebody that I love and I’m about to go out again to have a few drinks with friends. I haven’t thought about emails or twitter updates or what’s news on facebook for days and I don’t feel guilty for a second. On that same note rather than thinking about the progress of a project back at work I’m thinking about how I just managed to order dinner from start to finish in Italian and feeling a bit proud of my 25 word vocabulary.

I’m taking my time out. I’m stopping for a few days. But I know when I’m ready to start I’ll be as ready as ever. I know that when I turn that key in the engine the car will go faster than ever before because I’m refuelling at the moment.

No matter how much you love your career, your hobby, your partner or your dog if you spent 24/7 dedicating yourself to that pursuit you will soon lose your passion for it and the spark in your eye will soon fade.

So what I’m saying is, that it’s ok to take a break once in a while and refresh. It will be worth the while. Then when your ready again your goal will be clearer and more attainable than ever. Take my advice, I dare you.

With love from Siena.

Happy New Year from The HRockstar & Don Draper

Firstly I’d like to say Happy New Year! I’m very excited for 2011. I’m going to be a bit quiet for a few weeks whilst I make some changes to the blog and redesign it but I’ll be back bigger than ever very soon.

But considering it’s Day 1 of 365 for 2011 then you might have a few ideas floating around your head. Maybe it sounds a little crazy and might require a lot of hard work. You’ll probably have doubters along the way as well. But for every doubter you come across remember this quote.

A new idea is something they don’t know yet, so of course it’s not going to show up as an option.~ Don Draper

So if 2011 sees you changing careers, changing jobs or pushing the boundaries of your industry then keep going and remember just because your idea is new doesn’t mean it won’t work. I look forward to hearing about all your new ideas and wins in 2011. I’ll be back blogging bigger and better before you know it!

My Birthday!

If you are reading this today on December 30th then I just thought you should know it’s my birthday!

Considering how close my birthday is to the end of the year I use this time to reflect on the past 365 days.

Being 21 has been an amazing year with so many highlights. When I look back at being 20 I think about travelling around the world twice and finishing uni and several other amazing experiences. But being 21 topped it in so many ways. Working full time, creating this blog, meeting new people, finding someone special… and all that jazz!

22 is already lining up to be an amazing year with some travel in January and the Tru London Conference in February. Big things are going to happen next year and I will be keeping everyone posted!

So happy birthday to me, Tiger Woods, LeBron James and anyone else who shares this day, and a happy new year to everyone!
HRockstar out.

What does success mean to you?

“Sometimes I think the fates must grin as we denounce them and insist the only reason we can’t win, is the Fates themselves that miss. Yet there lives on the ancient claim: we win or lose within ourselves. The shining trophies on our shelves can never win tomorrow’s game.

You and I know deeper down, there’s always a chance to win the crown. But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test, of giving all and saving none until the game is really won. Of showing what is meant by grit. Of playing through when others quit. Of playing through, not letting up. It’s bearing down that wins the cup.

Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead. Of hoping when our dreams are dead. Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet losing, not afraid to fall, if bravely we have given all. For who can ask more of a man than giving all within his span. Giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from victory.

And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind. It’s you and I who make our fates — we open up or close the gates on the road ahead or the road behind.”
